Horses + Kids = Emotional Intelligence

15 September, 2014

Linda Whitt is a school psychologist who knows the power of bringing children and horses together. This summer, Linda and her Feather River Equine Therapy and Assisted Learning program introduced 14 at-risk children to horses, ranch life, and the concepts of emotional intelligence.

The 5-week Power Tools for Living summer program provided children with emotional intelligence life skills training using horses in an experiential setting.  When it comes to happiness and success in life, Linda believes emotional intelligence (EQ) matters just as much as intellectual ability (IQ). Emotional intelligence helps you build stronger relationships, succeed at work, and achieve your career and personal goals. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.

The magic of the program is that children learned valuable life-long skills while having fun and riding horses too! Bread for the Journey was happy to make a grant of $800.
