21 January, 2015

For young girls growing up to adulthood, positive self-esteem, self-confidence and body image can be a major challenge in their lives.  Girls Raks Bellydance and Body Image Program addresses this challenge in a most creative way!  Girls Raks provides proactive tools for young women of all shapes and sizes who may struggle with body image and self-esteem. Teenage girls are given an opportunity to have a body-positive experience, free of judgment and competition with this remarkable program. Interactive art activities, meditation, and writing exercises focused on self-awareness and connection to others occurs prior to actual belly dance.  Course work also includes choreography and belly dance history.  A recent component of the program included connecting with women from Egypt to share the collective story of sexual violence against women. Bread for the Journey of Oakland was honored to provide Girls Raks$1000 in support of their ongoing program and the “2014 Hotter Than July” show performed at Eastside Arts Alliancein Oakland, CA.
